Valve Amp Revalve Checklist
If your amp has developed a fault and you want to "try" a new set of valves then make sure you first have a look at the revalve checklist below.
If your amp has any of these symptoms then seek the advice of a qualified technician - replacing the valves may not solve the problem and may cause further damage to your amp or the new valves!
- Loud humming noise from the amplifier
- Burning or "cooking" smell from the amp becoming more prominent
- Smoke coming from the amp
- Some or all of the valves don't "light up"
- One or more of the valves getting noticeably hotter than the others (the metalwork of the valve might glow red like an electric fire element)
- Banging or crackling coming through the speaker
In any of these instances switch off the power to the amplifier immediately and seek professional advice.
