Our superbly equipped, state-of-the-art lab has been designed to provide a full diagnostic, repair and restoration service for classic valve guitar amplifiers and HiFi equipment.
Services offered include full valve-testing and matching, a complete fault finding and repair service, electrical safety testing and certification, and where necessary or desirable, amplifier upgrading to meet current safety standards. This is increasingly required by performance venues before they will allow musicians to plug in and hook up on stage.
All work carried out is guaranteed for 3 months under normal usage, however we can not guarantee that another unrelated fault will not develop during that time.
Our Standard Valve Amplifier Service includes cleaning of all pots, valve bases and connectors, re-soldering dry joints, testing of all output valves and any preventative maintenance required as well as output power and PAT testing and certification.
Our fully equipped tool-room and machine shop allow us to re-manufacture virtually any otherwise unobtainable parts.
A limited stock of guitar amps is available for hire at reasonable prices if needed whilst your amp is being repaired.
To arrange a service or discuss requirements, call us on 0191 262 5613, e-mail us at sales@maughanamps.com or complete an online request.
How Much Will It Cost?
It is impossible to give an accurate quote for work without opening up and testing any given amplifier. Certain symptoms can be indicative of particular faults and any information about these we are given may help with diagnosis and repair.
As an example, often a typical amplifier repair including fault diagnosis which leads to some component replacement may take in the region of 2-3h incurring a labour cost of £70-£105 plus the cost of parts necessary to effect the repair (this could be a few pounds for resistors or small capacitors or tens of pounds for large filter caps, valves etc. A worst-case scenario is a replacement transformer for which the replacement part may cost in excess of £70). A simple repair such as a loose wire or connection may incur a much lower cost (£20-£35) if the fault is easily detectable and has not led to further damage to the amplifier.
We charge a standard bench diagnostic fee of £20 which is payable for all amplifiers even if the repair is considered uneconomical and covers our time for opening and testing the amplifier. This charge may cover simple repairs if they take less than 45 minutes to perform.
A list of our fees is given below.
